Valmet improves project efficiency with AOS remote monitoring tool developed by Rejlers

Valmet has adopted the Accelerated Operations Service to boost its project operations globally. The service is also currently being used for the Naistenlahti power plant project. AOS is a digital project service developed by Rejlers Finland Oy that increases the visibility of projects and makes it easier to find and share information.

The Accelerated Operations Service (AOS) is a browser-based cloud service, allowing for quick and easy deployment without any software installation. The image model service and the 360-degree camera provide an up-to-date view of the worksite, almost in real time. Valmet has been using AOS since September last year.

– We started using the Rejlers AOS in September 2020. The cooperation was smooth and we started with a one-month pilot package, after which we decided to continue using the service. We now use the service in our own projects, mainly in Finland, utilising the service globally for a variety of planning activities, says Tuomas Riikonen, Product Manager, Plant Engineering, Energy Rebuilds & Conversions, Valmet.

 – We always first offer our customers the option of a one-month pilot package, which includes a trial period with training. The training can include a pilot of the customer’s own project. We offered AOS to Valmet for the Naistenlahti boiler plant project, which was started with a pilot package. Things went smoothly, so it was natural for Valmet to continue using the service, says Jaakko Larvanto, Business Unit Manager, Accelerated Operations Service, Rejlers Finland Oy.

The AOS programme builds towards a digital future and designs comprehensive solutions that combine the latest technology with traditional competence in the sector.  Rejlers originally developed the service to boost its own project operations, but in response to customer feedback, the service was productised.

– Rejlers’ own project operations are very similar to those of our customers. Therefore, AOS is ideally suited for our customers’ own projects as well, even if Rejlers is not involved in the project other than by providing the service, says Larvanto.

– Using 360-degree images, we have documented the existing power plant environment to provide an up-to-date situational image for the placement of new structures and systems. It has been easy to create notes in the project service and the service has also made it possible to look at views of the facility remotely, says Riikonen.

Project staff find 360-degree images to be an important aid

In addition to worksite project monitoring, Valmet has used AOS for many other purposes.

– In the Naistenlahti power plant project, we have used AOS to share information with the contractors, engineering and site management, among other things. We have also trained staff, such as installation engineers, and using the service to illustrate the subject matter has helped us improve their understanding, Riikonen says.

– Project staff have found the 360-degree images to be an important aid along with the point cloud, and the service has received praise for its ease of use. In addition to the worksite and engineering functions, the service has benefited contractors, HSE monitoring and marketing.

An up-to-date view reduces the need to travel

AOS makes it easy to produce an up-to-date view of the project site for the entire project staff and partner network. This reduces unnecessary travel and makes it easy to find information.

– The image model service and the 360-degree camera provide an up-to-date view of the worksite, almost in real time. This way, information is available quickly and travelling to the site is not necessary. The service reduces risks and downtime and greatly improves occupational safety on the site, Larvanto says.

Valmet has also adopted the service in their boiler plant project in the Czech Republic.  With AOS, Valmet has created a virtual view of the project site so that only one person needs to visit the site. The visitor can provide the same view to the rest of the project staff as they see when they are on site.

-Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not possible to travel to the site during the tender phase, so our local staff visited the site to shoot it with a 360 camera. The project service enabled us to gain 360-degree images to support our tender planning within a week and without travelling, Riikonen commends.
