What is Project Planning?

Oct 19, 2020 | Blog

Project planning is at the heart of the project life cycle, and tells everyone involved where the project is going and how it’s going to get there.

The project planning phase is when the project plans are documented, the project deliverables and requirements are defined, and the project schedule is created. It involves creating a set of plans to help guide the project team through the implementation and closure phases of the project. The plans created during this phase will help us manage time, cost, quality, changes, risk, and related issues. They will also help you control staff and external suppliers to ensure that you deliver the project on time, within budget, and within schedule.

The project planning phase is often the most challenging phase for a project manager, as you need to make an educated guess about the staff, resources, and equipment needed to complete your project.

The Tools

Oracle Primavera, Microsoft Project or Excel, Clarity PPM or just pen and paper – and personally I believe that they are all great tools to plan a project. There are many developers for such tools, but projects have different complexities and clients have different demands and so the right tool is filtered from this great pool of software.

Rejlers Industry sector has chosen Oracle Primavera software as its primary planning tool. In my experience it’s one of the best tools out there with a huge history of development. This software provides one of the most complete sets of features that ensure the best quality in a schedule.

But I think that the tool is nothing without the planner. The project needs the planner to give the inputs to the planning software, it needs the planner to analyze the outputs of the software and fine tune the schedule according to the requirements and constraints of the project.

The Team

In my experience, having the right tools is complemented by having the right people. Both of these important factors will almost always guarantee positive results in the life cycle of project. The planning professionals will provide key data to the project stakeholders to ensure that the project is steered toward successful completion within time and budget. I believe the planner is part of the Project Controls team and together they part of the body of a project with the Project Manager as the head and mind who uses their valuable input as source of project success.

Rejlers has a great team of professionals spread across Finland, Sweden, Norway and Abu Dhabi. A diverse team of experts putting their best efforts to overcome challenges from multiple complex projects. The projects are unified under the same database to ensure the best practices are used and that the team is constantly learning from each other.

The Mission

Rejlers has the best tools and the best experts to lead a project to success regardless of difficulty, complexity and constraints.
